Just pick a scripture passage that means something to you right now, copy it into a post with as much or as little commentary as you choose, and put a link to that post in Mr. Linky below. It’s that easy, and you may never know whose heart God touched because you took the time to share His Word.
Do you ever wonder why there are so many variations of Christianity? Do you ever wonder how Christians can interpret the same passage of scripture so many different ways? I have a theory about this based on this short passage that God wrote on my heart many years ago, emphasis added.
But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?” So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him. (John 7:14-18)
God promised to pour out His Holy Spirit on all Christians. If you have received this second baptism, the Holy Spirit will teach you, even as Jesus became learned without a formal education. How could anyone get it wrong?
The problem comes when we stubbornly cling to what we have learned from the world, or from a denomination, or from a particular church. When the Holy Spirit speaks to us about a particular issue, our response should be obedience in thought and action. We should certainly be as the Bereans and make sure what we have heard is backed up by scripture, but our response is still obedience.
When we waffle, when we don’t act on what we have heard, I believe that it will be a little harder to hear the Holy Spirit next time, to know if it’s God speaking to us, or our own imagination. God doesn’t speak truth to us just for the fun of it. Accumulating truth is a worthless exercise if we don’t put it into practice.
I also believe that, as patient as God is, if we continue to ignore the truth He speaks, He will simply stop speaking to us. If we’re extremely stubborn, he’ll not only allow us to be deceived, he’ll send a deluding influence upon us Himself.
Discernment comes with obedience. I wish more people would take this concept seriously.
Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness. (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12)
