Proclamation from the White House Press Office:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America …do hereby proclaim September 28, 2009, as Family Day. I call upon the people of the United States to join together in observing this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities …

He probably won’t agree that my activity is appropriate, but I wanted to get into the spirit of things, so this post is it. I’ve taken a little look at the definition of “family” and here are a couple of the results.

Webster’s 1913: The group comprising a husband and wife and their dependent children, constituting a fundamental unit in the organization of society.

NAS Bible: For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name (Ephesians 3:14-15)

Why definitions, you ask? Well, it seems that the prez’s proclamation also includes a new definition of family. Here’s how his stacks up:

Whether children are raised by two parents, a single parent, grandparents, a same-sex couple, or a guardian, families encourage us to do our best and enable us to accomplish great things.

So I guess a family is now defined as any place with kids. I’m surprised he didn’t include public schools in his list, as he wants state control of them from “from the day they are born to the day they begin a career.”
