At least 181 people are dead, 500 are injured, 5000 are homeless, and 1.1 million acres of land have burned in the worst natural disaster in Australia’s history – and the fires still rage.

Warwick Spooner, who lost his mother, his wife, and his home to the blaze, blasted the local council for their “green” policy, which denied residents the ability to cut down trees and clean-up bushland in preparation for the fire season.

“We’ve lost two people in my family because you dickheads won’t cut trees down,” he said.

Another resident said she had asked the council four times to tend to out-of-control growth on public land near her home, but her pleas had been ignored.

There was widespread applause when Nillumbik Mayor Bo Bendtsen said changes were likely to be made about the council’s policy surrounding native vegetation.

But his response was not good enough for Mr Spooner: “It’s too late now mate. We’ve lost families, we’ve lost people.”

Perhaps it’s time to worship The Creator instead of the Creation.

And beware not to lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, and be drawn away and worship them and serve them, those which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. (Deuteronomy 4:19)
